Thoughts: Android vs. iPhone

Posted in electronics, thoughts by krisyee on December 20, 2011

Me being the Mac/Apple lover I am, I’m surprised I don’t have an iPhone. And to be honest, when the iPhone 4S came out, I wasn’t too impressed. I’ve had an 8mp camera on my phone for over a year and a half. I’m able to tell my phone to navigate to a certain location or tell my phone to Google search something. And dual core processors are pretty much standard on a lot of the Android phones out there now. People constantly ask me which operating system I like better. My answer to them is that I’m an Apple fan and while I do think the iPhone is a good phone, there are certain things about Android that I like better. BTW, these are in no particular order.

1. Widgets- Believe it or not I like the fact I can add widgets on my phone. Whether they’re picture widgets, MLBAtBat or ESPN score widgets, or even the standard Google widget it makes it that much easier to customize my phone.

2. External Battery- Although the iPhone battery life is usually pretty good, it’d be nice to change only the battery if needed instead of replacing the whole phone.

3. Upgradable Memory- What happens if you’re iPhone is low on memory because you filled it up all the way? I have a 16gb Nano that I thought would be enough for my music. It’s currently full. Androids give you the option to change  your memory cards.

4. Free Navigation- I  know what you’re thinking. There’s an app for that. Well on Androids the turn by turn navigation comes built in and I don’t have to worry about trying to find what app works best.

5. Adobe Flash- There’s been talk that Android phones will no longer support Flash, but until then the browser experience on Android’s is more like on a computer than the iPhone is. Try getting tickets for Cirque Du Soleil on an iPhone and the seating chart won’t show. Also try playing a video that’s embedded on a website on an iPhone.

6. Google Software Names- Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, and the newest…Ice Cream Sandwich. Okay, this isn’t really a reason, but it’s pretty fun hearing all the newest software names. Whoever is responsible for naming all the software versions after food desserts and pastries…thumbs up to you.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m still an Apple fan and majority of my electronics are Apple. In fact, I recently had to give up my work phone which was an iPhone. For the past 4 months I got to rock both an iPhone and Android. Call me selfish or crazy but I liked having both. I knew that if my Android died, my iPhone would still be working. But if I needed directions, my Android worked best. To be honest, I think I really liked the iPhone because of Instagram. Damn you Instagram! But now that I have a 4G Android for work (which I love using the internet for because it’s so fast), a part of me wants to get the iPhone for my personal phone. Decisions decisions!

I know plenty of people that have a hard time deciding between Androids and the iPhone. If you’re stuck and can’t decide, ask yourself what it is that you want to be able to do on your phone and what you’re going to use your phone for. Figure out what things are most important and then find out which phones could do what you want them to.

iPhone 4 Coming to Verizon

Posted in electronics by krisyee on January 11, 2011

First and foremost, the rumors are FINALLY over. Secondly, I won’t have to hear “When are you guys getting the iPhone?” ten times a day anymore.

From what we know this will be a CDMA phone and will not run off of LTE. It’ll be hotspot capable. 5mp camera with HD video. And the pricing will be $199.99 for the 16gb and $299.99 for the 32gb. Existing Verizon customers will be able to pre-order on February 3rd and the phone will be available to everyone on February 10th. Data pricing wasn’t announced so we’ll see what comes up.

Special Edition R2-D2

*NERD ALERT*

It’s crazy how much money George Lucas is making on upcoming Android phones. He’s getting paid just for people using the word Droid. It was bound to happen for one of these manufacturers to come out with a Star Wars special edition Android phone. And you may think “Who in the world would buy this phone?”. Well trust me…people are interested. Not me of course, but it’s still pretty cool! Lol And I’m curious to see how much one of these “collectables” will be in a few years.

Verizon’s releasing the special edition R2-D2 Droid 2. It’s more expensive than a regular Droid 2 but it comes with a R2D2 media docking station and also headphones.

You can see more pictures here.

Told you there was a nerd alert.

HILARIOUS

Skype Mobile

Posted in electronics, technology by krisyee on March 26, 2010

Last month I wrote a post announcing that Verizon teamed up with Skype to create Skype Mobile. After a month of waiting, the application finally launched yesterday. It allows you to do everything Skype does except for the video chat of course. But with this application you can do instant messaging, call other Skype users from your phone at no additional cost (even if they’re international), and even call land lines using money you have on your Skype account.

I decided to download it and give it a try. Instant messaging was no problem of course, but then I tried calling BFFiHK (who of course is in Hong Kong…in case you didn’t get that. Lol). When I asked him how the sound quality was when I called him he said “perfectly clear, but very digital”. To be honest I was a little surprised at his response. I know some people were thinking that it wasn’t going to be very clear and that the sound quality wasn’t going to be up to par, but I think this app is definitely an easy way to call internationally at no additional cost. Yea you can do that from Skype on your computer, but this is MOBILE. Use it anywhere you are.

Unfortunately this app’s only available for Verizon Blackberry and Android phones. If you’re lookin to switch over, holla at me! Lol

The Droid & Droid Eris

Posted in electronics by krisyee on November 5, 2009

I can’t get into too much detail about this since it’s technically not out yet, but tomorrow Motorola’s Droid phone launches in all Verizon Wireless retail stores along with HTC’s Droid Eris. I’ve never played with a Google Android phone until recently and I have to say that the Motorola Droid is pretty dope. The Eclair software (Android 2.0 OS) has some advantages over the Cupcake software (Android 1.5 OS) but they’re both pretty responsive. The Android software allows you to create your own apps for your mobile device and also share your apps in the Android Market (to find out more about that, check out android.com).

I have to say that this is probably one of the biggest launches for VZDub and I get the privilege of being at work at 6am for it. Yay…so for all you tech savvy people that are planning on getting it, make sure you get there early. Unlike our Storm launch last year, we’re ready and lines are expected. First come first serve! Doors open at 7am!

See you bright and early in the morning!

Google x VZW= iDon’t

Posted in electronics by krisyee on October 21, 2009

From a marketing perspective this iDon’t campaign is pretty good. There’s a lot of talk about it and everyone and their mama is coming into the store asking when we’re getting the android phone and what it’s going to look like. I really don’t know what it looks like or when it’s coming out but I assume soon considering they’re starting to advertise. I think this pretty much sums up the rumors about the iPhone coming to VZW, but you never know. I’m thinking 2011 for that one.

PS- Get ready for VZW having 4G next summer!
